About The Artist

Frances Swigart was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to a family with a history of artistic endeavor. From childhood she knew that art was her passion. While attending Newcomb Art School at Tulane University in the 1960s, she was trained in the printmaking techniques to which she adheres. Her work has been displayed in galleries in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, New York, and, of course, New Orleans. Ms. Swigart has taught at the Hunter Museum of Art and the University of Tennessee and is a guest lecturer for the Arts Council of New Orleans. She holds a fine arts degree from Tulane University and is an honors graduate of the Sacre Cœur. Her mentors are Sadie Irvine, James Steg, and Mario Villa.

Artist Statement

"I never had any choice about being an artist. I have always known that I am an artist. That is how I spend my life. I discovered my voice specifically in printmaking because I can make captivating images in multiple editions. It is important that what I create can be accessed by many. The beauty of the prints emanates from the basic techniques involved: etching, inking, embossing, and painting on marvelous papers from around the world." -  Frances Swigart

About The Press

The press came to New Orleans "down river" on a clipper ship, 150 years ago, from New York. It printed bank notes in New Orleans during the era of "King Cotton".

Having no gears, extreme pressure is applied by the hand of the master printer to the plate by five levers incorporated in huge wheel, 6 feet in diameter.

Presses of this kind are still in use though out the world. They are cherished by engravers of money and the etchers of fine art.
